Katherine Deves caught in a clash with trans activists after asking which ‘human rights’ they lack

Former Australian politician Katherine Deves engaged in a heated exchange with trans activists during a protest outside a radical feminist conference in Brisbane.

Deves, who was attending the conference, asked the activists to identify the human rights that trans people lack. The protesters were opposing a bill that would allow transgender and gender-diverse individuals to change their sex on their birth certificate without sexual reassignment surgery. The International Women’s Day (IWD) Brisbane Meanjin organized the conference.

Counter-protesters, many of whom held the transgender flag, showed up at the event, and police kept watch. The activists shouted down Deves when she tried to speak, with one chanting “trans rights are human rights.”

Deves later posted a video of the encounter on Twitter. IWD Brisbane Meanjin shares the same views as trans-exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs), considered by opponents as a derogatory term.

The group’s rally drew at least 40 guests, including Northern Territory senator Jacinta Price, women-only app founder Sall Grover, and feminist think-tank CEO Rachael Wong.

The group opposes “gender ideology” and called out the government for ignoring feminists in their opposition to the proposed legislation. The rally featured signs stating that “sex self-identification erases women’s rights” and “trans-identified men don’t belong in women’s prisons.” Just.

Equal spokeswoman Sally Goldner expressed her disagreement with TERFs who are concerned that “predatory” men might take advantage of the self-identification system.

A parliamentary committee supported the proposed bill and stated that it did not pose a systemic risk to girls and women. Deves had campaigned against transgender athletes in the 2022 election and previously faced criticism for tweets describing trans children as “surgically mutilated and sterilised.”
