Following a sighting by a pair of dogwalkers, Nicola Bulley’s body was recovered from the River Wyre over three weeks after she vanished.

Pressure is now building for an independent inquiry into Lancashire Police’s handling of the case, after officers missed her body in the river for 23 days despite extensive searches.

Former DCI Martyn Underhill, who served nine years as a police commissioner, said an independent review was needed to address serious questions about Lancashire Police’s media strategy and search of the river, adding that these were crucial issues that go to public confidence.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she was not “wholly satisfied” with the force’s explanations for revealing Ms Bulley’s alcohol dependency and menopausal issues and confirmed that investigations were ongoing.

A former Scotland Yard detective, Peter Bleksley, also criticized the police force responsible for the search for Nicola Bulley, stating that despite their use of experts and a nationally-recognized search doctrine, it was a pair of dogwalkers who found her body.
