TikTok vows to take action against Nicola Bulley search obstructionist

TikTok has committed to take legal action against social media sleuths who obstructed the hunt for Nicola Bulley and spread upsetting conspiracy theories about the mother-of-two online.

Yesterday, Lancashire Police announced that the 45-year-old mortgage adviser’s body had been discovered in the River Wyre in Lancashire.

‘Press and members of the public’ who ‘accused their dad of misconduct, misquoted and demonized friends and family’ were criticized by her family in a sorrowful statement they released.

This cannot happen to another family, they added, “This is simply horrible; they must be held accountable.”

Ms. Bulley vanished on January 27 while walking her dog along the St. Michael’s on Wyre, and since then, her case has received a great deal of media interest.

Locals in the small Lancashire village where she vanished have blasted “ghouls” and amateur social media detectives who have flocked there to look into the matter themselves.

Videos speculating about her abduction have been all over the social media site TikTok, featuring rumors, conjecture, and conspiracy theories.

In a statement, TikTok said: “Our sympathies are with Ms Bulley’s family and friends during this trying time.” In order to track how the discussion about this case is developing, we have mobilized resources.

In response to violations of our Community Rules, “We are taking action, including deleting content and accounts, and limiting the reach of some content by rendering it ineligible for recommendation.”

Yesterday, following police confirmation that the body taken from the river was really Ms. Bulley’s, the grieving family of Ms. Bulley made a heartbreaking statement.

They declared: “Nikki was the center of our universe; she was the one who made our lives so wonderful, and nothing can ever dim that. We will never forget her.”

The ones who care about our daughters the most will provide them with the assistance they require.

“Today, our family liaison officers had to confirm our darkest suspicions.

“We will never be able to fully understand what Nikki had to go through in her final moments,” the statement goes.

“To those who sincerely helped and supported us, we thank you,” the family continued.

“The St. Michael’s community’s support—from family, friends, and total strangers—has been nothing short of reassuring and heartwarming.” You are who you are, friends. I’m grateful.

“Our hearts ache deeply for those who are left without loved ones. Keep your faith alive.

Finally, Nikki, you are no longer listed as missing; you have been located, and we can finally allow you to rest.

We’ll take it from here. We adore you, always have and always will.

About 11.36 on Sunday morning, a self-described “psychic” located Nicola’s body in the River Wyre in Lancashire.

Further information concerning Ms. Bulley’s disappearance was revealed by Lancashire Police this week, including the fact that she was deemed a “high-risk” missing person from the outset of the investigation because of “particular vulnerabilities.”

She then disclosed to police that she had “major issues” with drinking as a result of her persistent difficulties with the menopause.

According to investigators, it was “essential to clarify what we meant when we talked about vulnerabilities to avoid any additional conjecture or misinterpretation” that this level of detail had been disclosed, a “extraordinary action.”

Following the police revelations, there was a public outcry of outrage, and on Monday, Home Secretary Suella Braverman expressed her dissatisfaction with Lancashire Constabulary.

At 8:43 a.m., she led her spaniel, Willow, along the River Wyre path in the direction of a gate and bench in the lower field.

The last confirmed sighting of her occurred at 9.10 a.m. by a second witness.

Ten minutes after the First call began at 9.20am, her phone was back near the bench, and it stayed connected after the call.

Ms. Bulley’s family and the school where her kids go were informed of her disappearance at 10.50am.

On the same day, Ms. Bulley’s whereabouts were the subject of a police inquiry, and witnesses were urged to come forward.

According to reports from The Mirror, some 100 people attended a meeting held by locals to plan a search for Ms. Bulley in the village hall at 10.30 on Sunday.

The river and its banks are “very dangerous,” according to the police, who advised volunteers to proceed with caution. They added that any action in these regions posed “a significant risk to the public.”

30 January

Police were “keeping a pretty open mind about what could have happened,” according to Superintendent Sally Riley of the Lancashire Constabulary, and they were not treating Ms. Bulley’s disappearance as suspicious.

31 January

A man who had been walking a tiny white fluffy dog close to the River Wyre at the time of Ms Bulley’s disappearance was contacted by Lancashire Constabulary as a potential witness.

Her family issued a statement in which they expressed their gratitude for the community’s support and stated that her girls were “desperate to have their mummy back home safe.”

Lancashire Constabulary spoke with a second witness who they had identified using CCTV and the public, however they advised officers that they had no additional information to support their investigation.

Together with police divers searching the River Wyre, members of the North West Police Underwater and Marine Support Unit examined the vicinity where Ms. Bulley’s cell phone was discovered. In the meantime, Ms. Bulley’s family made a public plea for assistance in locating her.

3 February

According to Lancashire Police, the possibility that Ms. Bulley may have fallen into the River Wyre is being investigated.

Ms. Riley cautioned against making assumptions, but added that it was “probable” that Ms. Bulley’s dog’s “problem” brought her to the edge of the ocean.

4 February

On the morning of Ms. Bulley’s abduction, a “important witness” who was observed wheeling a stroller in the vicinity of the area where she went missing was mentioned by Lancashire Police as someone they were trying to find.

5 February

Police identified the woman as a “critical witness” and she came forward. The police agency stated that she was “very much being regarded as a witness” and issued a warning against “absolutely inappropriate” online rumors and harassment.

Specialist Group International (SGI) underwater search experts’ Peter Faulding announced that after receiving a call from Ms. Bulley’s family, his team would start searching the river.

6 February

Friends of Ms. Bulley expressed hope that the family will receive answers with the aid of a specialized underwater rescue team.

In the meantime, Ms. Bulley’s partner, Mr. Ansell, said in a statement issued by Lancashire Police: “I have two little children who miss their mother dearly and who need her back. It has been ten days since Nicola went missing.”

This has been such a trying time for the girls in particular, but also for me, Nicola’s family, friends, and the larger community, and I want to thank them for their love and support.

Later on, they talked about Ms. Bulley’s problems with alcohol and perimenopause.

16 February

The Bulley family demanded a halt to the attention that had been “distracted from finding Nikki, and more about speculation and rumors into her private life” in a statement issued through Lancashire Police.

The police watchdog received a referral from Lancashire Police regarding interactions the department had with Ms. Bulley before she vanished.

Suella Braverman, the home secretary, wanted a “explanation” from the force for disclosing Ms. Bulley’s private information.

17 February

When Ms. Bulley’s disappearance was first reported, Lancashire Police indicated that it was launching an internal inquiry into how the case had been handled. The Information Commissioner then promised to interrogate the force about the revelation.

18 February

As Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also expressed “concerns” about the news, Ms. Braverman met with police leaders to address how the inquiry was being handled.

19 February

On the morning broadcast round, Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt called the police revelation “shocking,” and shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper reiterated her worries over the “extraordinary” amount of personal information about Ms. Bulley that was made public in her letter to the police force.

Less than a mile from the location of Ms. Bulley’s disappearance, a new search effort was started.
