Newborn baby abandoned at a construction site in KZN

Police in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, are investigating a case of child abandonment after a newborn baby girl was discovered on a building site by a passerby on Thursday.

According to a police statement, the infant was just a few hours old when it was found at the site.

The proprietor of a local hardware shop is alleged to have discovered the newborn abandoned in a small hole on the adjacent building site.

The baby was wrapped in a T-shirt and a plastic bag. Before paramedics came, the shop owner hurriedly purchased a blanket to wrap around the baby.

Officer Thenjiswa Ngcobo reported that the infant was discovered on Dennis Shepstone Street.

The infant was discovered to be hypothermic upon arrival of the paramedics. The baby was promptly stabilised before being sent to a local hospital for additional treatment.

The police are conducting an investigation.
