Man suspected of stealing a car dies in a brawl with residents

Following a confrontation caused by an attempted auto burglary, one man died and two others were detained.

Wednesday afternoon, police were dispatched to Craigieburn in northern Melbourne after receiving complaints of a man attempting to break into a vehicle.

Residents confronted the man, resulting in a physical brawl.

The man was apprehended and treated by paramedics when police arrived, but he went unresponsive and died at the spot.

Two men, ages 33 and 72, were detained at the site and interrogated by police before being released the next morning awaiting further investigation.

No charges have been filed as of yet.

A statement added, “Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.”

The police sealed off Hothlyn Drive and designated it a crime scene before beginning their investigation into the incident.

Wednesday night, detectives and forensic experts remained at the scene for the most of the evening.

Thursday morning, a blue automobile parked near where the victim died remained at the site.
