Gemma Owen made an unpleasant blunder when she mixed up the names of partner Luca Bish and her ex-boyfriend Jacques O’Neill.
Jacques had arrived on the show as a surprise, much to Gemma’s surprise, and it seemed he was on her mind as she addressed her new beau by his name.
Viewers will see the Islanders gathered after Afia Tonkmor’s leaving in footage from Tuesday’s show, before Luca hugs Gemma… and she inadvertently addresses him as Jacques, who is sitting right next to them.
The other candidates picked up on the Freudian slip, with Amber Beckford asking, ‘Did you just call him something else?’
Luca, who appeared to be taking it all in stride, said, ‘I know what she said.’
‘Oh my god, there is no way that happened, there is no way that happened!’ exclaimed Dami Hope.
Paige Thorne, who is now dating Jacques, also gave Gemma a pass, saying, ‘Easy mistake to mae, hun.’
After Luca left, Gemma asked Paige whether it was ‘bad’ that she’d made the error, to which Paige said, ‘That was bad, I am not gonna lie.
‘He stood there, you had your guy rubbing your shoulders, and you’re like… “Oh Jacques.”‘
After that, Gemma pulls Luca aside for a conversation about the embarrassing situation, and viewers will have to wait and see if they are able to put it behind them and move on.
Due to the couple’s age difference, viewers expressed their thoughts on Gemma and Jacques’ previous relationship.
Gemma is 19 and Jacques is 23, and she said that she and Jacques broke up a year and a half ago, and that they were in a relationship for eight months before their split, implying that she was around 16 when they met and he was 20.
