Arrest of Ice Cream Van Driver for Drink Driving and Seatbelt Violation

Ice Cream Man Arrested for Drink Driving

In a surprising turn of events, an ice cream van driver found himself in trouble with the law in Devizes, Wiltshire. Mariusz Kekus, a 40-year-old resident of Mascroft Road, Trowbridge, was stopped by the police for a seemingly minor offense – not wearing a seatbelt. However, what followed was even more concerning.

Breathalyzing the Ice Cream Man

After pulling over the ice cream van on Hopton Industrial Estate in Devizes, Wiltshire Police conducted a breathalyzer test on the driver, Mariusz Kekus. The results of this roadside test were shocking – Kekus was found to have 90 micrograms (mcg) of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath. This measurement was more than twice the legal drink drive limit in the UK, which stipulates that drivers should not be in control of a vehicle with more than 35 mcg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath.

Charges and Court Appearance

In light of these findings, Kekus was charged with two offenses: drink driving and driving without wearing a seatbelt. He is scheduled to appear at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on September 29 to address these charges.

Police Action and Humorous Tweet

Following the arrest, Wiltshire Police took Kekus into custody. The police force also took to Twitter to share a lighthearted post about the incident. The tweet included a photo showing a police car parked behind a purple ice cream van adorned with the words “Enjoy Cadbury’s ice cream here.” The post playfully mentioned the addition of a “flake” – a reference to a popular ice cream topping – and the journey to custody. It was accompanied by the hashtag #whiskeyWhippy.

Twitter users couldn’t resist making light of the situation, with some joking that Kekus should have blown a “99” on the roadside breathalyzer test, a reference to a popular ice cream cone with a chocolate flake. Others playfully inquired if cones had to be placed around the ice cream van.

Legal Proceedings and Bail

Subsequently, Mariusz Kekus was bailed and will face his legal proceedings later this month on the aforementioned charges. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, even for those operating unconventional vehicles like ice cream vans.
