Driver slammed for allowing a young girl ride without a seatbelt on the highway

A driver has been criticised for allowing a young girl to ride as a front passenger on a highway without a seatbelt.

Online video footage of a white Hyundai i20 moving down the highway as a little girl wanders around was uploaded.

It was captured by a passenger in a vehicle that drew up beside the Hyundai when it was travelling at high speed.

In the TikTok video, the girl can be seen standing in the footwell and shaking her head while hanging onto the dashboard with one hand.

At least once while continuing to drive, the woman glances over at the girl.

Throughout the footage, the young girl continues to roam around, at one point placing her hand in her mouth.

Viewers have called the footage ‘shocking’ and ‘unbelievable’, and urged the video poster to report the incident to the police.

They were worried that if the car crashed, the young girl would go ‘flying through the window’.

Another said: ‘Wow so irresponsible. Hopefully she sees this and changes her ways… before child ends up on bonnet.’

One commenter said: ‘I see this so often these parents really don’t see the danger.’

However others suggested that the child could have undone their own belt while the car was moving.

‘Maybe parent is waiting to stop the car safely to belt the child in?,’ another commenter added.

Children between the ages of three and twelve, or up to 135cm in height, are required to use a car seat in the front or rear of a vehicle in the United Kingdom.

A child is required to wear a seatbelt when they are above 135cm tall or 12 years old.

A driver may be fined up to £500 if a child under the age of 14 is not in the right car seat or wearing a seat belt while the vehicle is in motion.
