The body was discovered at around 11.40 pm on Wednesday on the Salvatierra-Celaya highway.

Although the woman is yet to be formally identified, reports suggest she is 19-year-old Perla Cristal Gavina Ordaz, who went missing from Mexico City on April 9.

It is believed that she left on a trip with friends, and two men she was travelling with could be involved in her disappearance.

Local witnesses reported seeing hooded men tying the rope to a retaining barrier before attaching the body to the other end and letting it fall.

The hooded men were then seen fleeing the scene.

An autopsy is now underway to establish the cause of death, and authorities are yet to confirm drug cartel involvement in the killing.

Guanajuato was Mexico’s deadliest state last year, with 3,260 homicides, most of which were cartel-related.

This year, the state is leading the figures with over 500 homicides as of March.

It has become Mexico’s murder capital due to an ongoing war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the local Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRL).

The two groups are fighting for control of the drug trade and the state’s fuel theft racket, according to local security expert David Saucedo.
