Five zama zamas arrested after shootout


On September 23, two alleged illegal miners (zama zamas) were injured in a firefight with police in Boksburg, Gauteng. The conflict occurred after the police began an operation based on information in the region.

Colonel Dimakatso Sello, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), said that a multidisciplinary team investigated reports of illegal miners reportedly in possession of unlicensed guns.

“Upon approaching the said place in Main Reef road in Boksburg, the alleged miners started firing shots at the police, causing the members to retaliate,” stated Sello.

Five suspects were apprehended, including two who were injured during the gunfight. The police also recovered R5 and hunting rifle ammo and discovered a shotgun related to a Klerksdorp home invasion.

The five illegal miners are likely to appear in court shortly on accusations of unauthorised weapon possession. The probe is still ongoing.

Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni Trio Task Squad, Ekurhuleni Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic, EMPD, Emergency Medical Service, and private security businesses comprised the interdisciplinary team, according to Sello.
