Five shot during funeral of man killed by police

Five members of a family were shot while attending the funeral of a man murdered by a police officer last month.

At around 2.30 p.m. Thursday at the Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin, a funeral for Da’Shontay L. King Sr was being held when authorities say an unidentified gunman opened fire.

According to authorities, the scenario is still a ‘active shooter,’ and the gunman is still on the loose.

On March 20, a police officer shot and killed King, 37. An officer tried a traffic stop as part of a guns investigation at the time, and King exited his vehicle armed with a gun, according to police.

The cop allegedly told him to halt and obey directions, but he allegedly refused, prompting the officer to fire.

According to TMJ 4, all of the victims of Thursday’s shooting were members of King’s family, and they are being treated at Ascension All Saints Hospital, which is located nearby. Although their statuses are unknown, the hospital has been placed on lockdown ‘out of an excess of caution.’

Racine police warned locals to stay away from the scene on Twitter, describing the shooting as a “serious event.”

The Racine Fire Department and deputies from the Racine County Sheriff’s Office are assisting them in their investigation of the shooting.

According to the Daily Beast, one of the victims of Thursday’s gunshot was Kendra Gamble, who is now in critical but stable condition.

Cortaisha Thompson, her niece, stated, ‘She was shot at the graveside.’

‘We just got out of the hospital,’ she continued. ‘She was just taken to Milwaukee on Flight For Life,’ says the narrator.

Those who were present at the time of the incident reported hearing 20 to 30 gunfire, with one woman telling The Journal Times that it’sounded like firecrackers.’

Three boys playing basketball in Lockwood Park, just west of the cemetery, reported they heard gunshots approximately 10 minutes after a funeral procession passed by.

According to the Journal Times, the gunfire pierced the fence behind them, and they instantly began running.

As many shot casings dotted the pavement on Thursday evening, police were observed investigating the surrounding area.
