A massive shark fin that was seen only yards off the UK coast has caused anxiety.
Visitors to the beach have now been advised to exercise additional caution and vigilance when swimming or surfing in the vicinity.
Yesterday, February 19, at approximately 11am, a lady in Gunwalloe, close to Porthleven, saw the “unusually huge” fin. Cornwall.
The enormous fin, which one local claims could be seen from 30 meters away, was captured on camera by the unidentified lady.
It seemed to be too big for “the typical basking shark,” it was said.
According to their comments to Cornwall Live: “I don’t know what kind of shark it is, but it doesn’t appear like your typical basking shark, so I thought I would simply report its existence in case. The picture was shot at Gunwalloe at approximately 11 a.m. from a distance of around 30 meters.
It’s uncommon to see any kind of shark inshore this time of year and with a fin that large, hazardous or not.”
Shark sightings are regular in the vicinity; this summer, a blue shark was seen close to Trelissick beach.
Dan Jarvis of the nonprofit British Divers Marine Life Rescue at the time called the sighting “worrying.”
He said that sharks don’t often approach beaches and expressed concern that someone may suffer harm.
The Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team was called to assist a snorkeler who was thought to have been bitten by a shark in early August of last year.
The swimmer was under the attention of an ambulance crew after sustaining a leg injury.
There are concerns that a great white shark may have been seen off the west coast of Scotland in December 2022.
The alleged apex predator encounter was captured on camera by kayakers who were understandably pretty alarmed by what they witnessed.
While it is very improbable that great white sharks would be observed in UK waters, this 2012 video that is now under analysis may have a significant hint that they do travel this way.
