The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for waves in the Northern and Western Capes on January 13th. There is a moderate risk of modest weather-related consequences, as indicated by the warning indicator.

The weather alert is in effect from Saturday at 21:00 to Sunday at 23:59 UTC. The weather service predicted that the long-period swells will be a high-pressure weather system. Between Alexander Bay in the Northern Cape and Cape Agulhas, the shoreline may be impacted.

“A high-pressure weather system will bring long-period swells (15 to 18 seconds) closer to the west and southwestern beaches of the country.

“Within three hours, the significant wave height is expected to rise from 2.0 to 3.0 meters, and the swell period will increase from 8 to 18 seconds,” the meteorological service added.

The abrupt rise in swell duration is concerning to the weather service because it may lead to more dangerous circumstances for beachgoers, kayakers, and rock anglers.

Among the possible effects of the waves are:

Small vessels and personal watercraft may encounter navigational challenges at sea, which may result in them taking on water and capsize.
Disruption of seashore activities in a restricted area. The public is at risk of being surprised by high-energy waves and being taken out to sea, according to the weather service.
