A Californian youngster wept in front of the city council as she described the traumatic experience of encountering a ‘naked male’ claiming to be a transgender lady in the women’s changing rooms of her local YMCA.

Rebecca Philips, 17, addressed the Santee City Council on Wednesday night

After confronting the unnamed individual, Rebecca Philips, 17, addressed the gathering in Santee, a San Diego suburb, on Wednesday evening to advocate a change to the current policy.

She told the council that two weeks ago, when changing after swimming at the Santee YMCA, she witnessed a transgender lady undressed in the locker room.

She added, “As I was showering after my workout, I observed a naked man in the women’s locker room.”

I instantly returned to the shower, horrified, and hid behind their flimsy curtain until he departed.Philips came across the transgender woman in the changing room of the YMCA in Santee, California - a city suburb of San Diego

Philips stated that she was troubled by the idea of her five-year-old sister, whom she accompanies to the gym during the summer, experiencing the same circumstance.

She replied with a trembling voice, “This is the YMCA, where hundreds of children spend their summer afternoons in child care camps.”

This is the YMCA where my sister received gymnastics instruction.

The locker room was intended to be her sanctuary for showering, changing, and gossiping with her pals.

Wednesday evening, Rebecca Philips, 17, addressed the Santee City Council.

She encouraged them to alter their indecent and ‘obscene’ stance about transgender ladies utilizing whatever facilities they desired.

Staff, according to Philips, informed her that the trans lady had every right to be in the changing rooms, and that only people on the sex offender list were prohibited from accessing.

A state law in California allows anyone to use women’s facilities, including changing rooms, shelters, and jails. The legislation states that persons must be permitted to use facilities that correspond with their gender identity.

And in May 2022, three Democratic San Diego County supervisors opted to expand the definition of “woman” to include transgender individuals.

Nathan Fletcher, Terra Lawson-Remer, and Nora Vargas all voted in favor of the motion. The two Republican supervisors voted against the legislation.

Philips informed the council that the event had shocked her.

Supervisor Nathan Fletcher was one of three to vote in favor of the May 2022 law allowing anyone who identifies as female to utilize the facilities of their choice.

San Diego County supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer (left) and Nora Vargas (right) also voted to approve the bill.

When Philips inquired about the YMCA’s transgender policy, she was informed that “the man I observed was permitted to shower wherever he pleased.”

She said, “In Santee, an adult male can shower alongside a teen girl at your YMCA.”

Philips expressed her dismay with the YMCA staff’s response.

She claimed, “I was made to feel as if I had done something wrong.”

The indecent exposing of a guy to a minor female caused them distress.

Teri Maas, Association Director of Membership Experience at YMCA of San Diego County, called Philips’s complaining father, according to Philips.

Teri Maas, Association Director of Membership Experience at YMCA San Diego County, called Philips’ father to assure him that his daughter was never in danger.

Philips remarked, “She informed my father that I was not in danger.” That I was secure.

She added, though, “Could you knowingly send a minor into a room with a naked man and claim she was safe?” Or was it correct?’

We are aware of an incident involving two members in the Santee YMCA locker room earlier this month,’ the YMCA stated in a statement. The well-being and security of all of our members is our top priority.

As a community-oriented organization, we endeavor to address the needs of everyone. We acknowledge that birth and gender identity are delicate topics. We rely on subject matter experts, legislation, and guidelines established by the State of California to ensure that our policies are inclusive and respectful of all members of the community.

They stated that they are currently reevaluating their procedures in response to Philips’ complaint.Teri Maas, the Association Director of Membership Experience at YMCA of San Diego County, rang Philips' father to reassure him his daughter was never at risk

As part of our commitment to ensuring the comfort of all individuals, we are revisiting the floor designs of all lock rooms in all of our association’s facilities, they stated.

Our objective is to ensure that everyone who desires or requires extra privacy has access to it.

In recent years, trans women accessing female changing facilities and participating in several single-sex sports has become a political flashpoint.

Critics argue that trans women who still have male private parts should not be permitted in vulnerable or nude female places.

Supporters argue that only a minute percentage of trans women are sexual offenders, and that denying all trans women access to female areas persecutes the blameless majority.
