Woman found dead in her Winburg home

A woman was discovered dead in her Winburg home on Saturday, July 24, and the Free State police are investigating into a possible homicide. Members headed to the home after worried neighbours were unable to reach the deceased.

According to Captain Stephen Thakeng, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), the deceased’s neighbours in Winburg’s Voortrekker Street informed the police about the residence.

When they couldn’t get in touch with Nomathemba Sekonyela on July 22, the neighbours apparently became concerned. They got in touch with her husband, who allegedly informed them that his wife was in Pretoria.

Thakeng said, “Members swiftly responded and upon arrival at the scene, members found all curtains, doors and windows of the house closed… Upon closer inspection members found that the door was forced open”.

The body of Nomathemba was discovered inside the residence, her neck bearing obvious signs of strangling. The marks of a struggle were clearly visible on her arms. She had a blanket covering her.

“The sister of the deceased in Pretoria has been informed about this incident,” said the police spokesperson.

Teboho Sekonyela, a retired police officer, was her husband, but he was nowhere to be found.

Teboho is being sought after by the Winburg police station, which began a murder investigation in the hopes that he might be able to provide some insight.

“He is driving a sky blue Volkswagen Polo with registration number HBH 073 FS,” Thakeng added.

The investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Lizelle van der Westhuizen, urges members of the public with information regarding the former policeman’s whereabouts to call her at 082-466-8875 or Crime Stop at 08600-10111.
