»Who Is Mary on Ginny and Georgia?«

Ginny & Georgia on Netflix is so jam-packed with twists, reveals, and flashbacks that even the most devoted fans occasionally struggle to keep up with Georgia’s (Brianne Howey) background. In Season 2, the simple mention of the name “Mary” plunged Georgia into a tailspin of anxiety. However, while Ginny’s (Antonia Gentry) pointed name-dropping effectively shocked her mother, many viewers were left wondering who the heck Mary is.

Between Ginny and Austin’s (Diesel La Torraca) extended families and school lives, as well as Georgia’s professional life and involvement with the Neighborhood Club, Sarah Lampert’s dramedy series has a significant number of contemporary individuals to watch. Add flashbacks of Georgia’s teenage years to the mix, and it’s no wonder that viewers are racking their minds to recall who Mary is.

Who exactly is Mary in Ginny & Georgia? We’ll explain Mary and Ginny’s cryptic Season 2 reference to Georgia, but Ginny & Georgia Season 2 spoilers follow.

Who is the character Mary on Ginny & Georgia?

In Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia, Ginny attempts to cope with the revelation of her mother’s previously hidden criminal past. Ginny struggles to accept the truth about Georgia after PI Gabriel Cordova (Alex Mallari Jr.) informs her about the woman her mother once was and begins to rebel at home. Ginny inches closer and closer to a long-overdue honest conversation with her mother, but in the lead-up, she drops blatant indications about her background, such as “Mary.”

“What Are You Playing at, Little Girl?” is the third episode of Season 2 of “What Are You Playing?” Georgia confronts Ginny about her recent out-of-character behavior, and the two begin to fight in Paul’s presence (Scott Porter). Ginny asks Georgia if she wants Paul present for their chat, and Georgia responds, “Paul is going to marry me. He is present for everything.” Ginny tries to remind her that Paul does not know the real her by stating, “Our family is so happy. You, me, Paul, Austin… Georgia’s expression falls at hearing the name, and Paul queries the mystery individual. Georgia rushes out of the house and seeks safety in her car to process her feelings, paving the way for a more open relationship between herself, Ginny, and Austin.

Who is Mary, then? Mary is Georgia, then. Or, Mary was Georgia in the past, before she changed her name to Georgia in order to escape her past, begin anew, and perhaps keep herself and her children safe from her previous misdeeds.

In the first two seasons and through flashbacks, we learn that Georgia has not only committed multiple murders but also had a terrible childhood and ran away from her mother and stepfather. That means the 14-year-old Georgia seen in a flashback in Ginny & Georgia’s pilot (played by Nikki Roumel) is actually named Mary. Before she joined the Blood Eyes biker gang and established her new persona, Georgia’s name was Georgia. Fans may also recall the name Mary from the first season, when Georgia’s sister Maddie Atkins (Kelly McCormack) returned and used it. Gabriel also discovered Georgia’s real name throughout his investigation.

Despite the fact that Mary will always be a part of Georgia’s past, her reaction to hearing her name in Season 2 demonstrates that the reminder is highly upsetting and something she is desperately trying to forget.

The second season of Ginny & Georgia is now available on Netflix.
