Max’s ‘Ginny & Georgia’ Wardrobe Would Make Portia from ‘The White Lotus’ Proud

Portia from The White Lotus reigned supreme among the tumultuous television fashion stars of the year 2022. A new crazy wardrobe queen will be crowned in the new year, so I’d like to propose Maxine Baker from Ginny & Georgia for early consideration.

16-year-old Maxine Baker (Sara Waisglass) is one of Ginny’s best friends and the twin sister of Ginny’s crush, Marcus Baker, in the Netflix drama about a mother named Georgia (Brianne Howey) who tries to escape her criminal past and build a safe, stable life for her kids Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Austin (Diesel La Torraca) (Felix Mallard). As a lively, passionate, and openly gay character, Max injects Ginny & Georgia with much-needed lightness and energy, all while wearing fun, brazen outfits that would make Portia proud.

On Season 2 of The White Lotus, Portia (Haley Lu Richardson) is an assistant who travels to Sicily with her wealthy, needy boss Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge). Throughout the seven-episode run, the clothing of the Generation Z character, which was influenced by TikTok and thrift shopping, was criticized for being “tacky,” “messy,” “eclectic,” “tasteless,” and “heinous.” Portia donned a crochet bucket hat and a jumbled airport ensemble dubbed ‘early 2000s Lizzie McGuire chic’ without a second thought, sported large, thick-rimmed sunglasses and an abundance of white shoes, and displayed no remorse when donning clashing patterns or a look deemed ‘early 2000s Lizzie McGuire chic’ Alex Bovaird, the show’s costume designer, outdid herself with the character’s attire. However, Haley Lu Richardson courageously disclosed that she wore some of her own clothes throughout filming, which encourages me to assume that both the White Lotus character and actor would approve of Max’s disorganized Ginny & Georgia closet.

On Ginny & Georgia, Waisglass’ outfit is as daring, dramatic, expressive, and humorous as her character. And in Season 2, which was published on January 5 by Netflix, Max flaunts heavy jewelry, glittery tights, busy patterns, and bold crop tops like they’re going out of style. But occasionally she does so in a manner that makes you wonder how they were ever fashionable to begin with. Bernadette Croft, the costume designer for the program, designed a range of outfits for Max to wear throughout the season, including color blocks, edgy denim, and daring accessories. Max, like Portia, is unafraid to mix and match materials, wear a crop top, and disregard standard fashion and aesthetics in order to follow her heart.

The following are some of Max’s most eye-catching costumes from Season 2:

In Episode 1, she wears mom jeans and a green parrot crop top when creating a TikTok. (By the way, Portia would definitely wear that parrot shirt.)

The green checkered fuzzy crop sweater, multicolored peace sign necklace, large rings, clunky sneakers, white lace socks, and rhinestone sheer tights she wears when speaking with her ex in Episode 2

In Episode 3, she wears a cropped sweater with a busy pattern, butterfly clips, high-waisted ripped jeans, and pink suspenders (!! ).
Her Episode 3 argyle sweater vest, black skirt/books, purple checkered tights, and long-sleeve plum shirt.

Her brilliantly daring birthday attire from Episode 4, which consisted of a blue and white polar bear-patterned turtleneck, a yellow pleather skirt, sparkly black tights, and an incredibly extravagant birthday tiara.

In Episode 5, a color-blocked orange and pink crop top was worn with patchwork high-waisted jeans and platform boots.
The assortment of shirts she wears in Episode 8, one of which boasts voluminous floral-printed (?) sleeves, is illustrative.

Despite the fact that Max and Portia are both fashion-forward, it’s worth noting that Max wears some genuinely stylish outfits in Season 2, including her throwback bachelorette party look (competing with a floral-tied top, large earrings, and flared jeans), her Elle Woods-inspired pink sweater with orange fur (shown above), and her sophisticated wedding outfit from the finale. Max and Portia each have their own unique sense of style, but they share the same chaotic spirit and would enjoy mixing and matching outfits from one another’s closets.

Tanya informed Portia at one point at The White Lotus, “You’ll need to bring some cute stuff. Do you have any adorable items?” And in Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia, Max’s pal calls out her confused assortment of clothing, exclaiming, “LOOK AT HER! WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?” Max recalls that she discovered the item at a thrift store and “thought it was kind of ugly-cute.” The term “ugly-cute” perfectly describes these divisive fashion icons of Generation Z. They may have vastly different personalities and appear on different television programs, but their clothing is largely made from the same odd, thrift-store fabric.

Ginny & Georgia Season 2 is presently available on Netflix.
