The Prime Minister has proposed launching a large-scale training program for the Ukrainian military, with the capacity to train up to 10,000 troops every 120 days.
During a visit to Kyiv today, Prime Minister Cameron informed President Zelenskyy that the UK could lead a groundbreaking initiative that would fundamentally alter the war’s equation, ensuring that Ukraine’s Armed Forces have the resilience they need to win their struggle for lasting peace.
President Zelenskyy accepted the offer as the two talked about the situation in Ukraine and how the Ukrainian people continue to inspire the rest of the world with their heroic resilience.
The UK-led initiative would use battle-proven British Army skills to educate and exercise Ukraine’s Armed Forces, allowing them to speed deployment, rebuild forces, and scale-up resistance as they continue to protect their country’s sovereignty against Russian invaders.
If Ukraine accepts the offer, international partners will be approached to host the program.
From 2015 to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the UK trained around 22,000 Ukrainian servicemen under Operation Orbital. Forces from outside the nation would be trained under the new scheme.
Ukrainian forces were able to wage a furious defense against Russia’s unlawful and unprovoked invasion because to the battle-winning tactics taught over the seven-year training.
Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, stated:
My visit today, in the midst of this conflict, is to give a plain and straightforward message to the people of Ukraine: the United Kingdom is with you, and we will be with you until you win.
As Ukrainian forces fire British missiles in defense of your country’s sovereignty, they are also defending the liberties we take for granted.
That is why I have proposed to President Zelenskyy a huge new military training program that has the potential to transform the balance in this battle by harnessing the most powerful of forces: the Ukrainian resolve to win.
Two months after my previous visit, the Ukrainian people’s tenacity, drive, and endurance are stronger than ever, and I am certain that their unwavering resolve will outlast President Putin’s ill-fated goals.
Each soldier would spend three weeks on the training course, studying front-line warfare capabilities as well as basic medical training, cyber-security, and counter-explosive techniques.
Along with the training offer, the leaders addressed how the United Kingdom can play a key role in resolving the grain blockade.
The large-scale training initiative builds on the United Kingdom’s worldwide leadership in assisting Ukraine in its heroic defense of its homeland.
More than 5,000 NLAW anti-tank missiles, long-range multiple launch rocket systems, and artillery weapons, notably 155mm Self-Propelled Guns, have already been offered by the UK in economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
