Emer-G-Med paramedics, together with several emergency response agencies, responded to a multi-vehicle incident on the N1 near Garsfontein in the Pretoria area about 19h00 on Saturday night.

According to reports from the scene, twelve light motor cars, a truck, and a bus crashed, injuring up to seventy persons.

Officers from incident command established an on-scene triage area, and additional examination found that one patient was in severe condition.

He required Advanced Life Support intervention to stabilise him before being evacuated to a specialty centre for the definitive care that he required.

The remaining patients were treated on the scene before being transferred by ambulance to several neighbouring hospitals for additional medical treatment.

As a result of the route being closed to provide emergency workers space to work, traffic in the region was seriously impacted.

The South African Police Services will look into the collision’s cause, which is currently unknown.
