A 28-year-old male motorist arrested on charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at an accident scene

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers detained a 28-year-old male motorist on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park on accusations of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at an accident scene.

JMPD officers and Traffic Wardens from the By-Laws Management Unit were responding to two accident scenes on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park at about 03h00am on Saturday, July 2, 2022.

While responding to the accident, a beige Renault Sandero drove at great speed, hitting Luleka Sobetshe, a 37-year-old female JMPD Traffic Warden.

After striking Traffic Warden Sobetshe, the driver of the Sandero failed to stop. Local police gave chase and eventually caught the driver.

Traffic Warden Sobetshe was regrettably pronounced dead at the scene despite calls to emergency services.

When Sandero’s driver was given a breathalyzer test, the result was 0.69 mg/l, which is more than the 0.24 mg/l legal limit.

The motorist was apprehended and arrested by Eldorado Park SAPS and he will appear in court later this week.

The whole department at JMPD, led by Acting Chief of Police Thulani Maxwell Khanyile, extends its sincere sympathies to the Sobetshe family, friends, and coworkers. May her beloved soul rest in peace.
