Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has expressed concern at the impact fuel hikes has on the public transport industry

Concern over the effects of the fuel price increases on the public transportation sector has been voiced by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula.

“It is important not to minimize how the fuel price increases will affect regular people who depend on the taxi industry.

In the broader context of government interventions to lessen the impact of fuel prices on the cost of living for common citizens, I will discuss this issue with the leadership of the taxi industry, Mbalula said on Friday.

The Minister took note of claims made about a potential shutdown by some organizations connected to the National Taxi Alliance (NTA).

He stated that he intended to discuss the rising cost of fuel and other important issues affecting the industry with the SANTACO leadership in South Africa.

In accordance with the NTA’s request to the Minister, the Minister also intends to consult with the NTA leadership about potential actions to mitigate the effects of the fuel price increase.

Mbalula is also troubled by the ongoing violence in the taxi business.

The Minister has pledged to carry out the National Taxi Lekgotla’s resolutions, including the introduction of sanctions against those who support violent taxi drivers.
