Isla Bryson, a transgender rapist, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the rape of two women while still a man. Bryson, 31, was convicted of raping a woman in Clydebank in 2016 and a second victim in Drumchapel three years later.
After changing gender while waiting to stand trial, Bryson was sent to HMP Edinburgh, also known as Saughton Prison, one of Scotland’s most notorious men’s prisons. Lord Scott noted Bryson continues to deny the offences, claiming the victims colluded to press charges.
The court heard Bryson, who appeared in court wearing a blonde wig, black leggings, and fluorescent pink jacket, is still pursuing full gender reassignment and is on the maximum recommended doses of hormone prescription from Glasgow’s Sandyford sexual health service clinic. However, Lord Scott said the seriousness of the crimes far outweighed Bryson’s mitigatory circumstances.
The judge acknowledged Bryson is considered vulnerable in some ways due to adverse childhood experiences but said, “you see yourself as the victim in this situation. You are not.”
Lord Scott ruled that Bryson presents a particularly significant risk to any woman with whom Bryson forms a relationship and is considered “a high risk of reoffending.”
The rapist will serve the sentence at HMP Edinburgh, which holds around 900 prisoners per day and was for many years the home of serial killer and paedophile Peter Tobin.
It is also home to two other sex offenders who want to be women, Albert Caballero and Jonathan Mallon, and pre-op trans killer Paris Green. Three prison officers were reportedly sacked from the prison earlier this month after assaulting an inmate.
