Students rushed to the hospital after a truck collided with a classroom

Fifteen kids aged between 14 and 18 years have been transported to the hospital after a truck slammed into a school classroom in Cosmo City, Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Emer-G-Med paramedics reported the trainees had slight to moderate injuries. The students were reportedly stabilized and treated at the scene before being brought to the hospital for further evaluation.

The collision occurred one day after Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced the festive season road fatalities figures for 2022, which revealed that trucks were responsible for 4% of the 1,451 fatalities.

Mbalula told the media on Tuesday at the Grasmere Toll Plaza that the weeks of 15 to 21 December and 22 to 28 December had the most fatal accidents, with 327 and 316 fatalities, respectively.

Gauteng reported the highest number of road fatalities, an increase of 5.5% from 275 to 290, with the Boksburg tanker explosion also contributing to the numbers.

The minister added that pedestrian fatalities continue to be a source for worry, with a 54% increase between Western Cape and Gauteng.
