In response to CBS anchor Stephen Colbert’s claim that Michigan’s Republican gubernatorial candidate fabricated a story about a Democrat-turned-Republican voter, the voter himself has expressed his indignation.
Colbert criticized Republican candidate Tudor Dixon at a recent debate with incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in a monologue on The Late Show last week.
During the discussion, Dixon told how a man who attended her campaign event revealed he had been a lifetime Democrat, but had decided to switch parties owing to his annoyance with’sexually graphic novels’ in school libraries. Colbert observed that Dixon’s claim was “completely false.”
‘Fine. This happened,’ Colbert joked, using air quotes to emphasize his doubt. The voter turns out to be genuine and severely dissatisfied.
“To argue that I’m not here, that I don’t exist, and that I’m not human is sheer ignorance,” Khalil Othman, 41, told the Detroit Free Press, adding that he attended a Dixon event where he announced his decision to switch political parties.
If this person did his homework and began studying, or if he had his staff conduct a small amount of research on who attended Dixon’s rally, they would be able to find my name on social media quickly and easily. Simply Google it,’ added Othman.
Wednesday night, a spokesman for The Late Show did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.
Othman, a Yemeni father of five who ran for Dearborn’s city council and the Michigan House of Representatives as a Democrat, is a former candidate for both positions.
In a Facebook post, he noted that he has been an ardent Democrat since his arrival in this country nearly two decades ago.
I’ve never cast a Republican ballot. The issue of sexually graphic materials in the schools went too far, in my opinion. Regarding my children and family, I am unmovable. Before the party,’ he penned.
Othman wrote that Democrats ignored or downplayed his concerns, so he attended a rally to hear Dixon speak and “form my own opinion.”
He announced his “divorce” from the Democratic Party, explaining that her words and his conversations with the candidate and her supporters had motivated him.
Othman is a part of a group of parents who have been protesting in Dearborn’s public school libraries for the past few weeks against books containing allegedly inappropriate sexual content, including some with LGBTQ themes.
Othman stated to the Free Press, “I am a proud American Muslim who constantly expresses my opinions and concerns.”
Since the past two decades, Dearborn has reliably voted blue for the Democrats. But no longer. In the name of my family and myself, I guarantee that my relatives and friends will vote Republican,’ he declared.
Dixon, a former conservative radio personality, won the Republican nomination in Michigan with the help of Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos’s wealthy family, who are influential political players in the state.
While Dixon has consistently trailed Whitmer in the polls throughout the campaign, the gap has drastically reduced as the November 8 election approaches.
Multiple recent polls indicate a tie in the race, with the most current RCP polling average giving Whitmer a 3.4-point edge.
In her debate with Whitmer on October 25, Dixon made reference to Othman’s story without addressing him by name. She added that a voter had approached her at a rally and informed her that he was joining the Republican Party because he believed the Democrats were ignoring his problems.

Dixon stated, “I am quitting the Democratic Party because Democrats refuse to advocate for our children and return to the basics.”
