These days, Prince Harry can be found just about everywhere. Last night, that meant he was present in the Stephen Colbert’s Late Show studio, where he spoke candidly with the host about his family and life since quitting the royal service. Harry began his conversation with the presenter over a hefty flow of tequila given by Colbert, during which he spoke extensively about his tense relationship with his brother Prince William and how he recalls his late mother.

Before leaving the royal family to live in California with his bride, Meghan Markle, Harry opened up about his personal life over drinks, divulging things that had been kept secret for years. Harry told Colbert that his mother, Princess Diana, would be upset to see how they interact now if she could see the tremendous divide that his departure from the family had produced between him and his elder brother. In his autobiography, Spare, Harry admits that he and his brother once got into a violent altercation about Markle.

We wouldn’t have arrived at this point, he said. “There is no way that the gap between my brother and I would be the same. It’s difficult to predict where we would be today or where those connections would be.”

Harry said, “She died at 36 and I was 36 when this all got off,” claiming he had felt his late mother’s presence “more in the past two years than I have in the prior 30.” Come other words, my wife and I simply said enough, we can’t handle this, and we need to carve out something else in January of 2020. So, it was a fascinating time overlap.

Harry’s visit on the Late Show coincided with the publication of Spare, which was yesterday, but days before his book was released, leaks made some of the more explicit portions of his autobiography public. In response to the media enthusiasm around his book, Harry said that the leaks lacked “context.”

“Look, I won’t deny it; the last few days have been painful and difficult due to my inability to stop the leaks you mention. The most dangerous falsehood they have spread is probably that I somehow bragged about how many people I murdered in Afghanistan, he continued, alluding to the Spare passage where he said he had killed 25 Taliban militants.

“My words are not hazardous,” he said, “but the way my words are spun are highly deadly to my family.”
