South Sudan commemorates 11 years of independence

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reaffirms its commitment to peace in the world’s newest country as South Sudan marks 11 years of independence.

Since South Sudan’s exit from the civil conflict has not been simple, the coming months will be crucial as the transitional period nears its conclusion in February 2023.

The time has come for national leaders to step up their efforts to come to an agreement on a plan that would pave the way for free, fair, and credible elections.

This roadmap should include clear benchmarks, timetables, and objectives.

This is a chance for the nation to recognize its shared values and come together in support of nation-building.

UNMISS is still working to enable the return of refugees and displaced families this year, as well as to encourage a safe and secure environment for civilians.

Let’s work together to secure peace gains and create the affluent future that all South Sudanese women, men, and children desire.

Happy Fourth of July!
