Soldiers could soon be able to make parts for guns and tanks on the battlefield using 3D printers

Soldiers may soon be able to produce parts for guns and tanks on the battlefield through the use of 3D printers. Last month, 3D printing technology was used to make metal parts for the Army’s armoured vehicles.

This new technology has the potential to revolutionize global warfare. Defence firm Babcock is responsible for this breakthrough and plans to build portable frontline units. Its 3D printing technology uses “additive layer manufacturing,” a method that builds small amounts of steel in layers.

Tom Newman, chief executive of Babcock’s land division, said the new technology could fix supply chain issues on the ground. He also added that this could make armies more self-sufficient, stating: “For almost anything you can hold in your hand or pick up, you would be able to print with a really fine level of detail.

We’ve already produced parts that weigh up to 20kg and parts that are really complex shapes. There’s no reason you couldn’t use this technology to support many different kinds of armoured vehicles.

We are working with our customers to find ways to use the technology in the field, so they wouldn’t need to take as many parts with them when deployed.”

Newman believes that Babcock’s technology could help Ukrainian soldiers in their war against Russia, a conflict that has been ongoing since the invasion in 2022.

Babcock has been supporting government-led efforts to help Ukraine by providing training and equipment. This new 3D printing technology has the potential to change the face of warfare, increasing self-sufficiency and reducing supply chain issues on the ground.
