Nokia has introduced a new smartphone, the G22, which the company says is designed to be easily repairable. The G22, which costs £149.99, can have parts replaced with a few basic tools in five minutes, Nokia claims.
A replacement battery is £22.99, screen £44.99, and charging port £18.99. By contrast, an official manufacturer repair to a smartphone screen typically costs £170.
Using third-party repairers, which can be cheaper, often invalidates a warranty. Nokia’s warranty, which lasts three years, is not affected if an owner does the repair themselves.
Adam Ferguson, head of product marketing at HMD Global, said, “The G22 has been purposefully built with a repairable design so you can keep it even longer.”
The phone was developed with a “repairable design” in order to keep costs down and cut down on the number of handsets being sent to landfill. The G22 is an entry-level smartphone with a 6.5-inch screen, three-day battery life, and a 50MP camera.
Repairing phones has become more difficult as companies have added more components, making it harder to get at things. Batteries, in particular, have become difficult to replace.
Half of mobile phone users say they would like to have their device repaired at a reasonable cost if it breaks outside of the warranty period.
Nokia has teamed up with repairs specialist iFixit, which will stock the parts. They will also do the repairs, but for an extra cost. At-home “fit kits” with all the tools cost £5, or Nokia says most people will have the necessary tools at home, such as a small screwdriver, a SIM tray pin, and a guitar pick or similar item.
Nokia’s G22 is set to launch on March 8. Nokia was once the world’s largest phone maker, selling two in every five, before being left behind after being slow to adopt touchscreen displays. These days, Nokia phones are made by HMD Global under license.
