A seven-year-old boy named Alfie Tollett tragically died after being crushed between two cars in a car park in Plymouth, Devon. Alfie had just finished watching his brother play rugby at his local club and was changing out of his boots when the incident occurred.
At the opening of his inquest, a statement was read on behalf of the coroner Ian Arrow, outlining the details of the freak incident that led to Alfie’s death.
According to the statement, an electric vehicle was struggling to park and ended up shunting another parked car at the Plymstock Albion Oaks Rugby Club, which crushed Alfie between the two vehicles. The statement read, “(Alfie) was stood at the rear of the family car changing his boots for his shoes after watching his brother play rugby.
A stationary vehicle parked behind the family vehicle was then struck by another electrically propelled vehicle that was attempting to park; this vehicle has shunted forward the parked vehicle and crushed Alfie between the two vehicles.”
Alfie was rushed to Derriford Hospital but unfortunately passed away due to blunt force traumatic chest injuries. Police are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam footage of the incident, and a 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and released on bail until May.
Since the incident, tributes have poured in for Alfie, who was a beloved member of the Plymstock Oaks RFC. His family released a statement expressing their grief and thanking everyone for their support during this difficult time.
The Devon and Cornwall Police are continuing their investigations into the incident and are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them. They have provided a reference number for people to use when reporting any relevant information.
