SA Minister of Basic Education hosts a breakfast for top achievers in Fairland, Johannesburg

Angie Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education, hosted a breakfast for top achievers on Thursday morning in Fairland, Johannesburg, prior to the much-anticipated matric results announcement.

The class of 2021 obtained a pass percentage of 76.4%, a marginal improvement from the pass rate of the class of 2020.

Later, the director-general of the department, Hubert Mathanzima Mweli, will offer a technical briefing to elaborate on the National Senior Certificate results.

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric class of 2022 passed with a 98.42% pass percentage on Wednesday, a modest rise over the 98.39% pass rate recorded in 2021.

89.32% of the cohort qualified for university enrollment, 7.50% qualified for entry to diploma study, and 1.57% qualified for entry to study at the higher certificate level.

Kathleen Oberholzer, chief executive officer of the IEB, praised the class of 2022, stating that despite social and emotional problems brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, they have succeeded.
