Excitement rises for the 2022 matric results after Basic Education Minister hosted breakfast for national top achievers

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga held a celebration breakfast for the nation’s top achievers on Thursday morning, heightening anticipation for the release of matric results for the year 2022.

Mathanzima Mweli, the department’s director-general, is set to give a technical briefing on the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results later on Thursday.

During the congratulatory breakfast, the students, clothed in their school uniforms, and their parents glowed with pride and appreciation. Parents sung in harmony to express their pride in their children’s accomplishments so far.

The Class of 2022 was affected by Covid-19 when they began grade 10 three years ago, and those in KwaZulu-Natal had their difficulties exacerbated by the devastation caused by rains in April and May of 2022.

Bathobile Nkambule, one of the top achievers from Highveld Secondary School in Mpumalanga, told the media that being a top achiever meant a great deal to her and her family.

“My family was very supportive throughout the journey. They made sure that I had everything I needed to study and relieved me from my household duties,” said Nkambule.

“Loadshedding was a huge challenge. Some of my school material was in my device and when it hit, I had to resort to using hard copy, so as to not fall behind.”

Nkambule said that she intends to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting at the University of Pretoria.

Motshegka said at the breakfast that the Class of 2022 is exceptional since they were the first cohort to experience the new CAPS curriculum and grade R. Due to Covid-19, they were also subjected to stringent lockdowns.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, she is anticipated to make the announcements.
