A young guy from Eersterust, Pretoria, has been pleading with the Department of Basic Education for his matriculation certificate, but each time they tell him to “return in two weeks.”
Duan Jacobus, age 28, is now concerned that he may be unable to find employment if he does not provide his certificate by 1 November 2023.
Jacobus stated that he attended evening studies at Eersterust Secondary School in Pretoria the previous year and took his exam in August 2023.
“I only took one subject for my matriculation, which was the minimum requirement,” Jacobus explained.

“The department promised that my certificate will be available by November 15, 2022, but has not yet delivered.
I visited the department six times, and each time they instructed me to return in two weeks.
Jacobus, infuriated, stated that if he does not receive his matriculation certificate by the end of this week, he will miss out on a permanent position with an insurance business.
“I was told unequivocally that I will not be able to begin employment on February 1, 2023, if I do not have my matriculation certificate.
“I am the sole provider for my mother, two younger brothers, and my child, so I need this job.”
On Friday, Jacobus returned to the department and was instructed to contact Thandi because she is responsible for attaching his history results to his matriculation certificate.
TO BEGIN WORK, HE MUST HAVE HIS MATRIC CERTIFICATE “On January 20, 2023, I returned and was told to return in two weeks. I am losing hope and am worried by the fact that this country does not have the best interests of its youth in mind.
“If I were to lose this job opportunity, the consequences for my family would be catastrophic,” Jacobus stated.
“I am devastated and terrified of losing this job.”
