Two years after completing their purchase of the oldest club in Wales, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are poised to make their Wrexham debuts in a charity tournament.
The Canadian and American Hollywood actors will compete in a $1 million (£830,000) charity tournament this summer at the respective ages of 46 and 45.
Appropriately titled The Soccer Tournament, a new seven-a-side competition will feature 32 teams in June in Northern California, with nine teams, including Wrexham, already signed up.
One team will be captained by former Fulham and Tottenham forward Clint Dempsey, while the other will be comprised of women’s national team legends.
Former Premier League midfielder and current Wrexham player-coach David Jones will join Mark Carrington, Shaun Pearson, and Paul Rutherford, according to a statement by club advisor Shaun Harvey.
Harvey stated, “We are excited to debut in the United States with a legends team and the intent to win the tournament.
“Should we be victorious, $500,000 of the prize money will be used to improve the club’s community service.” Wrexham AFC is not limited to a single team.
It represents the people of North Wales, and this tournament will enable us to include former club members in a way that has never been possible before.
The tournament will begin following the conclusion of the National League season, with Wrexham vying with Notts County for the lone automatic promotion spot, trailing by five points with two games in hand.
Fans have been left thrilled but somewhat confused on social media, with one user asking, “Right, which of Rob or Ryan will be in goal for this tournament?”
A second individual exclaimed, “Wait, Ryan and Rob are playing? “I did not see that coming!”
