Ronny Mauricio continues to impress at the plate this winter as he heads into spring training with the New York Mets. Despite it being late February, Mauricio has been hitting with the same power that earned him the MVP award in the Dominican Winter League. He homered for the second consecutive day during the Mets’ 12-7 exhibition loss to the Cardinals at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Although this latest homer was not as impressive as the previous one, which was a 450-foot rocket, it raised awareness of the rookie shortstop.

Mauricio spent last season at Double-A Binghamton and was asked about his chances of making the major league level to start the season. He expressed his desire to be on the team and in the big leagues. During Monday’s game, Mauricio played shortstop and made an error on a grounder, which did not go unnoticed by manager Buck Showalter, who values defense. However, the previous day, Showalter praised Mauricio for starting a double play on a grounder.

Despite accumulating 744 plate appearances between Binghamton and winter ball since last season began, Mauricio feels he hasn’t gotten tired at all and would like to keep receiving opportunities. In 123 games last season for Binghamton, he had a .259/.296/.472 slash line with 26 homers and 89 RBIs.
