Rishi Sunak warned about risks of Tory civil war over Brexit if he proceeds with Northern Ireland deal with EU

The UK’s Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has been warned that he could cause a Tory civil war over Brexit by pushing through a Northern Ireland deal with the EU, despite opposition from Tory eurosceptics and the Democratic Unionist Party.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has signalled his intention to approve the agreement hammered out with Brussels, and Sunak will brief Cabinet ministers on the details of what has been secured so far. Sunak is hopeful of a positive outcome in talks with the European Union, and Johnson has urged opponents to put peace in Northern Ireland above their personal ambitions.

The Prime Minister had been criticised for allegedly involving the King in toxic Brexit politics, sending him on a controversial tour to EU nations. This is seen as a charm offensive as Johnson seeks to renegotiate the Northern Ireland Protocol with Brussels.

The proposed meeting between EU leader Ursula von der Leyen and the King, which would have seen the agreement signed off as the “Windsor Agreement”, was called off, and the PM was accused of dragging the monarch into a hugely controversial political issue.
