King Charles to hold controversial meeting with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen as Rishi Sunak tries to seal new Brexit deal

King Charles is scheduled to meet with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen at Windsor Castle today, which has caused controversy. The European Commission President has traveled to the UK to finalize a new post-Brexit deal for Northern Ireland, and she will also meet with the Prime Minister to hold “final talks.”

The expectation is that the meeting will produce a breakthrough. Additionally, the King will host the EU chief at his Berkshire castle for afternoon tea.

The palace stated that the King is pleased to meet any world leader visiting Britain, and the meeting will address a wide range of issues, including climate change and Ukraine. Brexit may also come up in discussion.

However, some members of the Tory right, such as ERG member and Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg, believe that King Charles should not be involved in the discussions, especially when the deal has not been agreed upon by Parliament.

Rees-Mogg stated that the King’s involvement would be a mistake, and that he should only be involved once everything has been completed and accepted.

He compared it to the King giving assent to Acts of Parliament after they have been agreed upon by Parliament, and not expressing his view on Acts of Parliament while they are still in the process. Therefore, he believes that the King should not be involved until there is full support for the agreement.
