Rex Ryan may be headed to Mile High.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday that Ryan has become a leading candidate for the Broncos’ defensive coordinator position. This week, Ryan met with Sean Payton, the new head coach of Denver.
The 60-year-old Ryan was the head coach of the Jets from 2009 to 2014, during which time the team reached two AFC championship games before missing the playoffs for four consecutive seasons. After that, he coached the Bills for two seasons, compiling a 16-15 record. Both seasons concluded without a postseason berth.
Since 2017, he has worked as a studio commentator for ESPN.
Ryan served as defensive coordinator for the Ravens from 2005 to 2008; he coached the defensive line during Baltimore’s 2000 Super Bowl victors.
Ryan had stated that his position with the Bills would be his last in the NFL.
Ryan told USA Today in September 2015, “This is unquestionably the end.” “This is my final stop as a coach, and then I will hand over the reins to the next generation. I will not travel anywhere else. There will always be some who judge you, but that’s okay.”
Given his previous success in the position, his status as a former head coach, and the general quality of life of working on television as opposed to the long-hour grind of the NFL coaching ranks, it would make sense that the price tag to lure Ryan as a coordinator would be high.
In June, Rob Walton, an heir to the Walmart fortune, finalized the $4.65 billion Walton-Penner purchase of the Denver Broncos. Greg Penner, his son-in-law, is the chairman of Walmart and the CEO of the Denver Broncos. The family is the wealthiest NFL owning group together.
The Broncos had a dismal 5-12 record last season. After trading multiple first-round picks to the Seahawks for quarterback Russell Wilson and providing him with a $245 million extension, it was expected that they would be Super Bowl contenders. Instead, the offense lacked cohesion, and head coach Nathaniel Hackett was fired within his first year on the job.
