Even pancake day has been affected by the growing cost of living, with the price of cooking a batch for the family jumping by a third in only a year.

Shrove Tuesday celebrations will cost £1.40 for the flour, eggs, butter, sugar, and milk needed to create 12 pancakes.

According to analysts, it is a 36% increase over last year, when the identical materials would have cost £1.03, breaking the inflation rate.

A stack of pancakes for £1.40 won’t break the bank, but it does show how retailers are passing on significant rises in the cost of essential components.

The price of a pint of milk has increased by 50%, according to social trading platform eToro, which is the greatest increase. A kilogram bag of sugar has increased in price by 47% since last year.

Energy and food prices skyrocketed as a result of the war in Europe. The size of the price increases is “frightening,” according to EToro market analyst Ben Laidler, since the components for pancakes are all standard household items.

“Almost every aspect of our life is being impacted by inflation, and holidays like Shrove Tuesday are no exception,” he said.
