PSL transfer rumors: European star open to SA return

Former Cape Town City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh is interested in returning to the Premier Soccer League.

EUROPEAN STAR OPEN TO PSL RETURN
The goalkeeper abruptly quit South African football in 2021 to rejoin FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Additionally, a Premier League great praised Benni McCarthy for his efforts with Marcus Rashford.

Nonetheless, Leeuwenburgh did not rule out a return to the South African premier division.

His future is uncertain, as the club has no plans to renew his contract at the end of the season. He has had a successful return to Holland.

Leeuwenburgh told Kickoff, “I’m open to moving elsewhere; a return to South Africa would interest me.”

He would add, “I would consider it if the appropriate club contacted me.”

“If one of the larger teams were to consider me, I would absolutely take them into account.

“Because I enjoyed my time in South Africa, where I felt valued, I would not rule out a return.”

Pule Mmodi has his sights set on the Kaizer Chiefs.

When asked to compare leagues, Leeuwenburgh stated that the stakes in the Netherlands were significantly bigger.

Khama Billiat will have surgery and is unlikely to return this season.

“There is a significant difference between the two countries because, in my experience, the pressure is much greater here,” Leeuwenburgh said.

“Football is what keeps everyone occupied here (Netherlands), but in South Africa the sport is somewhat less popular.

There are more football fans in the Eredivisie, and the sport plays a larger role in people’s everyday life, therefore the pressure is much greater because the stadiums are always packed.

In the stadium of FC Groningen, for instance, there are constantly 20,000 people.
