Protesters march to Russian embassy in London, chanting ‘Putin is a criminal’

On the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of people marched on the Russian embassy in London. Demonstrators chanted ‘Putin is a criminal’ outside the Russian consulate in Kensington, while many held up Ukraine’s blue and yellow flag in solidarity with the war-torn country after a year of conflict. Some had homemade signs, including ‘365 days of genocide’ and ‘stand with Ukraine – neutrality kills’.

A projector beamed the Ukrainian flag onto the Russian embassy building, and the Ukrainian national anthem played across the crowd. In addition to the demonstrations, dozens of Ukrainian troops undergoing military training in the UK joined the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, and the Ukrainian ambassador to the UK, Vadym Prystaiko, to observe a minute’s silence outside 10 Downing Street.

To date, over 82,000 Ukrainian refugees have been welcomed into the UK, and the Disasters and Emergency Commission report that the British public and businesses have raised £400m in donations to charities to help Ukraine.

A section of Bayswater Road is set to be renamed Kyiv Road in honour of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the new sign being installed on Friday.
