Princes William and Harry’s signatures are on a £18,000 Princess Diana letter

The handwritten autographs of young Princes William and Harry appear on a thoughtful letter from Princess Diana that is being sold for £18,000.

The Princess had sent a handwritten message to a police sergeant thanking him for putting on a motorcycle show for William’s birthday celebration.

The names of the boys, who were then seven and four, were added at the bottom; William’s was written in joined-up letters and Harry’s was written in bigger, separated characters.

It happens at the same time as Sotheby’s has said they’ll be selling the Attallah Cross pendant Princess Diana wore in 1987 for up to £120,000 at auction.

The note was to thank Sergeant George Plumb for putting on a motorbike display in the grounds of Kensington Palace for William's birthday party

For William, Harry, and their pals in 1989, Sergeant George Plumb of the Metropolitan Police and the Special Escort Group put on a spectacular motorcycle show in the grounds of Kensington Palace.

Diana’s letter is dated June 21, 1989, and it is printed on letterhead from Kensington Palace.

“Dear Sgt. Plumb,” it says. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy all those small kids and their moms were to see the show, so thank you and your crew for being here today on William’s birthday!

It meant much more to us that you and the motorcycle lads were able to participate in the birthday festivities since I am aware of how hectic you all are right now.

We would want to express our sincere gratitude for this. Sincerely, William, Harry, and Diana.

The remark about the crew being “busy” alludes to the fact that there were strikes by public transportation employees happening in London at the time, which had an impact on train, tube, and bus services.

The letter is being offered for sale by Peterborough, Cambridgeshire-based auctioneers William George.

According to a spokeswoman, Diana Princes of Wales, H.R.H. Prince William, and H.R.H. Prince Harry personally signed the letter, which was dated June 21, 1989.

It is written in Diana’s handwriting and is addressed to Sgt George Plumb Special Escort Group on letterhead from Kensington Palace.

It is appreciated that Sgt. Plumb and his crew organized the excellent Precision Motorbike show team for Prince William’s 7th birthday.

She was especially appreciative to the crew for fitting this into a day that was already packed with official events, which was made more difficult by the current rail, subway, and bus strikes.

“It is pretty unique to have an item autographed by Diana, William, and Harry.”

When they were acquired by a private collector six years ago, the letter departed Sgt. Plumb’s estate. It will be offered for sale once again at an auction on January 10th.
