The University of Port Harcourt’s Emerald Energy Institute for Petroleum and Energy Economics, Policy, and Strategic Studies is a graduate education institute for petroleum and energy economics, management, and policy. Its mission is to educate, empower, and engage petroleum and energy industry experts and corporate decision-makers. The rigorous, modular, and flexible Ph.D. program is administered in partnership with the Petroleum Engineering Department.

UNIPORT Emerald Energy Institute Postgraduate Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements for Post Graduate Programme (PGD)

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines: Sciences (Physical/Chemical), Management, Social Sciences, Geosciences, or Engineering. Applicants must hold an HND with a minimum Upper Credit. All candidates must also meet the University of Port Harcourt’s minimal matriculation criteria.

Masters of Energy Economics/Energy Business Management/Petroleum Business Management/Petroleum Economics Entrance Requirements

Applicants must hold at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in a relevant discipline of Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Law, Sciences, Geosciences, or Engineering. However, candidates with a second-class honors degree and at least three years of experience in the energy and petroleum business will also be considered. All candidates must also meet the University of Port Harcourt’s minimal matriculation criteria.

Master of Science (MSc) Programmes Admission Requirements

Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Engineering, or Physical Sciences with a minimum grade of Second Class (Upper Division). Candidates with at least three (3) years of experience in the petroleum and energy industries and a Second Class (Lower Division) Degree with a minimum CGPA of at least 3.00 (on a 5-point scale) will also be considered. Those with a law degree and sufficient years of experience in the oil, gas, and power industries may also be eligible.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program Requirements

Admission into the PhD program shall be competitive. Admission to the program is contingent on meeting the following criteria:

  • Candidate with a B.Sc. Second Class Upper (or Lower Division degree with a CGPA of 3.0 and above on a 5-point scale, in Social and Management Sciences, Engineering or Geosciences with at least three years’ experience in the oil and gas industry) is eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must have completed an M.Sc. degree in appropriate majors, with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale to be eligible for admission.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, ALL applicants must additionally meet the University of Port Harcourt’s minimum graduate school matriculation requirements.

UNIPORT Emerald Energy Institute Postgraduate Programmes Duration

  • The duration of the PGD programme shall be 12 months of full time, modular, intensive study. Industry/company workers can equally attend modular/sandwich programmes and accumulate credits for 24 months (Part time)
  • The Professional Masters Programmes (Masters of Energy Economics/Energy Business Management/Petroleum Business Management/Petroleum Economics) at EEI can be completed in 18 months and a maximum of 24 months.
  • However, the duration of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) programmes is 6 quarters of full-time intensive study and 8 quarters of modular intensive study.
  • The Ph.D. programme is hybrid, intensive and flexible. It would require a minimum of 12 quarters of intensive course work subsequent to MSc degree from reputable institutions with a minimum CGPA of 4.00.

UNIPORT Emerald Energy Institute Postgraduate programmes Method of Instruction and Objectives

The program is adaptable and rigorous. It is offered in modules by university staff and Nigerian and international industry specialists. On completion of this program, graduates will have acquired skills applicable to careers in petroleum and energy industries, government ministries, departments, and parastatals responsible for managing petroleum and energy resources, banking/financial institutions, energy and petroleum policy consulting units, and academia, among others.

How to Apply for UNIPORT Emerald Energy Institute Postgraduate Admission Form

A non-refundable Application Fee of N25,000 payable to Emerald Energy Institute, UNIPORT. The Application Forms should be submitted online or paper copies should be couriered to the Emerald Energy Institute office. Application Forms are available from Emerald Energy Institute or can be downloaded from their website: www.eeiuniport.edu.ng.

Eight (8) weeks from the date of publication, completed Application Forms must be sent to the Director of the Emerald Energy Institute for Petroleum, Energy Economics, Policy and Strategic Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.

Before admission is finalized, selected applicants may be invited to an oral interview.
