During the trial at Lewes Crown Court, police officers recounted the moment they discovered the body of Sue Addis, a 69-year-old restaurateur and owner of popular Brighton restaurants, Donatello’s and Pinocchio’s. Mrs Addis had been stabbed to death by her grandson, Pietro Addis, 17, while she was bathing in her £1 million home on Jan 7, 2021, during the third lockdown.
According to court reports, the teenager had called 999 to confess to the killing, but he denied murder. It had emerged that his grandmother was worried about his cannabis use and had been searching for ways to help him before her death. Pietro had been diagnosed with ADHD and was taking medication for the condition, but he had also been using cannabis and anti-depressants, which led to a deterioration in his behavior.

PC Richard Hall, who was among the first police officers to arrive at the scene, described the gruesome sight that greeted him when he found Mrs Addis lying in the bloodstained bath. He said there were puncture wounds on her body, and the water in the bath was red and stained with blood. PC Hall added that a substantial kitchen knife was on the floor, and he had to move Mrs Addis to check for additional wounds.
PC Annabella Perfect also arrived at the scene and recorded footage of Pietro wearing a white hoodie and responding monosyllabically to questions from officers. The court had heard that Pietro’s behavior had become strange in the days leading up to the alleged murder, and he had been banging on his grandmother’s bedroom door at night.
The trial continues, and the jury has been shown evidence of Pietro’s drug use and deteriorating behavior before the killing.
