Pier A Harbor House, a NYC restaurant owes the city $32M in rent

Pier A Harbor House, a renovated pier in Manhattan’s southernmost point, has been hit with a $32 million rent payment due to the city, as reported by ABC.

The 28,000-square-foot venue opened in 2014 after a delay of several decades, and it offers unbeatable views of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

It is located downtown and therefore is ideal for office workers in the Financial District and tourists en route from the Staten Island Ferry to the World Trade Center. Pier A Harbor House closed down in 2020 due to COVID-19, but it never reopened like other eateries in the area.

According to a lawsuit filed in the state Supreme Court in 2021 and cited by ABC, Pier A Harbor House started to fall behind on its rent payments in 2018.

The dining destination’s lenders filed the lawsuit, and the papers say the establishment “concealed the fact that, between February 2018 and October 2018, it had completely ceased paying the rent it owed to BPCA under the Lease, until it finally faced total dispossession of the Premises.” Pier A Harbor House handed over its keys to the Battery Park City Authority in summer 2020.

In exchange for the prime location, the father-and-son team of Harry and Peter Poulakakos signed a 25-year lease with the city and pledged to pay $39.1 million in rent during that period.

The Battery Park City Authority declined to share information on the back rent, as well as updates on Pier A, through its public affairs consultant. City Councilman Christopher Marte, who represents the area, said he has been trying to obtain information about the pier but hasn’t heard anything.
