Child loses ring on pier during marriage proposal

It seems like the ideal location for a proposal would be on a scenic pier with a lovely child.

When the ring slipped through the cracks of a pier and into the ocean below, it almost caused tragedy for one marriage.

When the band came loose and dropped through the gaps into the river below, Brisbane man Luke Aukuso’s meticulously prepared proposal—in which daughter Harpie opened the box to reveal the ring—was ruined.

In a video of the botched proposal uploaded to TikTok, Luke is heard encouraging his daughter to “look at mommy” before shouts of “Arghh!” and “Oh no!” can be heard as the diamond ring plummets into the pit below.

Luke, who was shooting the action, exclaimed, “You can’t jump, it’s too shallow,” as he tried to get it, his thong falling off as he dove into the water below.

Luke rapidly dove under the pier, full of adrenaline and a burning desire to save the engagement ring.

It was a 6m leap into around 1m of water at low tide, and adrenaline struck him hard, according to his fiancée Stephanie, who shared the good news that he had successfully retrieved the ring with her followers. Everything worked out well.

As one of the parties is heard saying, “Right, let’s go off the pier,” the film concludes with a lesson that is obviously learned.

More than 200,000 people have liked the video, and TikTok users agree that it would be better to steer clear of proposing in any location where a ring can get lost in the crevices.

One commenter commented, “Note to self: don’t propose on the floor with crevices that will swallow your ring.”

Another person said, “This is why you don’t engage kids in a wedding or proposal.”

The third person said, “This is why you never propose on a sundeck.”
