On the Indaba Show, host Steven Taylor discusses O’Ryan Winter’s life and career in the creative arts industry with singer, producer, and actor O’Ryan Winter.
Taylor described Winter as a “legend of Cape Town” due to his nearly three decades of experience in the field.
1997 saw the release of Winter’s debut album, The Dawning. Winter won a part in the soap opera Backstage and also served as the show’s music director.
He was the sound producer for the South African picture 2 Thirds of a Man, which was released the previous year.
Growing up in Wellington, New Zealand, Winter was influenced by gospel and R&B music.
His passion in music began when he grew intrigued by the organ at his family’s home. This quickly led to his playing the instrument and learning others, including the guitar.
Winter claims that musicians such as Gladys Knight and James Brown inspired him.
“If you want to create funk music, you should learn from these men.” “Back in the day, those musicians put a lot of thinking and storytelling into their music,” he remarked.
“Before you discover your own voice, you must be able to learn from the masters. And then, once you’ve established your base, you can construct your own style. That’s exactly what I’ve done.”
