Steven Taylor interviews Sybil Lynch, a renowned American soul singer, on the Indaba Show prior to her weekend performance at GrandWest.
Sybil and her 12-piece band will be supported by local artists like as Lady Zamar, Amy Jones, Vuvu Kumalo, Andrea Fortuin, and SA’s Got Talent runner-up Mady Abrahams.
The 57-year-old celebrity stated that she is excited to perform her 80s and 90s hits, including When I’m Good and Ready, Walk on By, and Don’t Make Me Over.
Sybil recalls her first journey to South Africa following the end of apartheid and the return of artists to the country.
“I recall visiting South Africa in the early 1990s, before Nelson Mandela was elected president of the country.”
“”The amount of love I received from the communities I was able to visit and sing in the small clubs that welcomed me made such a difference,” she remarked.
Her travels to the countryside, particularly Cape Town, inspired her appreciation for community and music.
They accepted this American girl with Native American ancestry.
Sybil stated that her passion in singing began when she was young because her family was filled with musicians.
“Genetically, I believe I was inclined to have the ability because my mother and aunt both sang, and my mom’s cousin, Maxine, is an original member of the group En Vogue. Growing up, it seemed as though music was always present.”
However, she had not always envisioned pursuing a career in music. Sybil was a speech and theatrical arts major with a concentration in broadcast journalism and a minor in psychology.
She was initially interested in working for the Federal Communications Commission and had a passion for law and protecting women and minorities.
“It was amusing because I never intended to become a musician. But I have always enjoyed songwriting. I’ve always loved to write. She stated, “I’ve always been rhythmic and lyrical.”
