According to reports obtained by Naija News, at least 17 shops were directly impacted by the inferno. The market, situated in the ancient town of Ile-Ife, is recognized as the largest in the area.

Fire Service Confirms Incident: Cause Remains Uncertain

Adekunle Ibrahim, the spokesperson of Osun State Fire Service, confirmed the incident. However, the cause of the fire, which occurred around 12:30 am, could not be immediately ascertained.

Firefighters from both the Osun State Fire Service and the fire unit of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, worked together to contain the blaze.


Security Measures Amidst Battling the Blaze: NSCDC Operatives on Guard

While firefighting efforts were underway, Kehinde Adeleke, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun NSCDC, reported that operatives of the command were on guard to prevent looting.

The focus remained on halting the spread of the fire to other parts of the market.

Falilat Lawal, the leader of the market women in Oja Tuntun Market, expressed distress over the recurring fire incidents.

She urged the state and federal governments to intervene by reconstructing and transforming the market into a thriving commercial hub. Lawal emphasized the inadequately arranged shops as a contributing factor to the vulnerability of the market.
