Despite undergoing a substantial renovation, reports have emerged that the roof of the National Assembly in Nigeria is still leaking.
This development has raised concerns among users and staff of the building, who question why the leaks persist even after a significant allocation of N30 billion was dedicated to the renovation just a year ago.
Renovation Efforts and Allocated Funds
The decision to renovate the deteriorating National Assembly building was made by the lawmakers in the 9th Assembly.
They approved a budget of N30 billion in the 2021 fiscal year, specifically allocated to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for a comprehensive renovation of the structure.
Awarding the Renovation Contract
In April 2022, Visible Construction Limited was awarded the contract for the renovation of the National Assembly.
The intention behind this decision was to address the longstanding issue of leaky roofs, which had previously caused flooding in the lobby area.
Leaks Persist Amidst Renovation
Despite a year passing since the renovation efforts began, reports continue to emerge regarding the persistence of roof leaks at the National Assembly.
However, the Project Engineer, Tajudeen Olanipekun, assured the press that specialized chemicals would soon be applied to the affected expansion joints, resolving the leakage issue.
He emphasized that the renovation work was ongoing, and the completion of the entire project would put an end to the roof leaks.
Engineer’s Perspective and FCDA Involvement
Tajudeen Olanipekun likened the current situation to a student in the middle of an examination, stating that a final report on the roof leakage could only be given upon the completion of the renovation.
He expressed confidence that the problem would be resolved by the time the project was handed over to the FCDA.
Olanipekun also reassured that engineers from the FCDA were actively involved in the renovation process, alleviating any concerns regarding the project’s progress and eventual success.
Ongoing Efforts and Future Expectations
Despite the ongoing challenges with roof leaks, Visible Construction Limited and the FCDA remain committed to completing the renovation work.
The expectation is that once the entire complex has undergone the necessary repairs, the issue of roof leakage will be a thing of the past.
As the project progresses, it is hoped that the comprehensive renovation will finally address the long-standing issue and ensure a functional and leak-free National Assembly building.
