MPD officers used sirens to stop the driver on Grayston Drive. The driver hopped out of his vehicle and attempted to run away from the JMPD officers, leaving his passengers stranded.

An off-duty cop jumped out of his vehicle behind the taxi and ran after the driver. The cop grabbed the taxi driver and held onto him until a JMPD officer made his way to where they were standing.

A video of the incident has been circulating on social media. JMPD confirmed what happened and revealed that they are aware of the video circulating online. According to IOL, the incident occurred on Sunday, 8 May.

Why did the he flee the officers?

JMPD officers were orchestrating a roadblock when they attempted to stop the minibus taxi driver. The driver, who was transporting passengers, did not stop. JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the driver did step out of his vehicle and approached the officer who stopped him.

The officer requested the driver’s licence and instead of returning with it, the driver hopped into his taxi and drove off.

“As he drove off a chase ensued with officers following in pursuit. Officers managed to block and stop the vehicle not far from the roadblock,“

Fihla said.

After the vehicle was blocked, the driver stepped out and attempted to flee. That is when an off-duty South African Police Service (SAPS) officer jumped out of a white Mercedes-Benz and apprehended the driver.
